Blog Post by YAY! DIY contributor Lauren, one very talented crafter!
I started making tutus when my daughter was a few months old. I am always looking for new creative things to do, and came across some cute tutus on the Internet. I decided I could do this myself, and went about learning how. These tutus are easy to make, even a novice crafter can do them. And, they are so inexpensive, you can make one for every occasion if you so choose!
Supplies:
Ribbon (something that matches your tulle)
3-6 yards of tulle (one color or multiple colors)
Yes, that is it for supplies!! You could really make this tutu for about $5-$8!
- Start out and measure the waist of the child who will be wearing the tutu. Add about 6 inches to that and cut your ribbon to that length.
- Cut your tulle into strips about 30 inches long. This is a good starting point for length but may need to be adjusted according to the height of the child. You can buy tulle on spools, which is much easier to cut into strips, or you can buy it by the yard. If you buy by the yard, here is a little tip for cutting into strips. Leave the tulle folded. Starting at the fold,
roll the tulle up toward the top. Once the tulle is rolled into a long tube like shape, cut it about every 3 inches. That automatically gives you some long strips. You will then have to cut the strips in half to get the length you want, but it’s much easier this way. - Once you have your strips of tulle, you want to tie them around the ribbon. First, make a knot at each end of the ribbon where you want the tulle to stop. You will start tying the tulle at the knot. The remaining ribbon will be left loose for tying around the child.

- Fold the strip of tulle in half. Hold the tulle at the half mark and make a loop. Pull the ends through the loop, which in turn, makes a knot around the ribbon. This is extremely hard for me to describe in writing for some reason so I included a drawing for this. Hopefully that helps!
- Continue tying the strips of tulle until you get all the way around the ribbon. Once you are finished, try it on the child. You can always make adjustments to the length at this point.
And there you have it – a beautiful tulle tutu for the little princess in your life! Have fun experimenting with different color combinations. You could make one for every holiday if you want!
