A few weeks ago I posted a link to Southern Living’s BBQ pork chili. And guess what? I made it! And it was the EASIEST RECIPE EVER.
As for a review? My BF LOVED the chili. He thought it was a fantastic. I liked it with the cheese
grits, or on top of chips, but alone I found it a bit too sweet for me. I let my BF pick out the BBQ sauce. He chose Bull’s Eye, which I find too sweet in general. I wish I had used something with more of a kick, such as Luling City Market’s BBQ sauce. (Which you have to order online from Texas, but SOOOO worth it.)
That being said, I will certainly make this again. Next time, I may try it as a topping for nachos, or, I may substitute a pork shoulder for pulled pork, and roast it in the Dutch oven using Southern Living’s recipe. I think that would be DELICOUS.
This is a recipe I’d highly recommend, but just advise you to choose your BBQ sauce and prepared pulled pork carefully, depending on whether you’re a savory or a sweet person.
Here’s the recipe (which can also be found here) and some photos!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds shredded barbecue pork (you can use ready to serve kind from the grocery
store) - 2 (14.5-oz.) cans diced tomatoes with green pepper, celery, and onion
- 1 (8-oz.) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup barbecue sauce
- 1/3 cup Chili Seasoning Mix – (I love this spice mixture – you’ll have extra. I saved mine in a Tupperware; I’m going to use it in all of my chilies!)
- ¾ cup Chili powder
- 2 tablespoons ground cumin
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano
- 2 tablespoons dried minced onion
- 2 tablespoons seasoned salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons dried minced garlic
Preparation:
- Stir together shredded pork and all ingredients in a Dutch oven or pot; bring to a boil over
medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. - Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes.
- Serve with cheese grits, on nachos, or with toppings, such as, sour cream, diced plum tomatoes, shredded lettuce or spinach, shredded cheese, diced onion, sliced green onions, chopped cilantro, chopped avocado, sliced jalapeño peppers, cornbread croutons, or tortilla chips.
If you’ve made it, too, let us know what you think!

I tried the recipe too and I wasn’t a big fan. However, I took a couple of additional shortcuts and bought pulled pork that already came soaked in BBQ sauce, and a packet of chili seasoning (instead of making my own with all the spices). It probably would have been better if I followed the recipe
It was obviously incredibly easy, but I think I will always like my four-hour turkey chili better.
