Harvesting Yarn from a Sweater
Posted by: | CommentsNow that warmer weather is here – it’s finally time to think about spicing up the wardrobe for spring! Hooray! Except, how to do that on a strict budget, particularly in the accessories department? Erin one time floated the idea of a spring scarf to me, and I always liked the image but I hate spending money on scarves now that I know how to knit.
Then, I saw this great tutorial on Apartment Therapy’s Re-Nest about how to take an old sweater apart for it’s yarn. Anyone’s winter closet is full of sweaters that you no longer want to wear – but can’t throw away. How perfect is this for giving it a second life? It’s a little bit tricky but well worth it.
Best of all, you don’t have to figure out how/where to stash all those sweaters over the summer. Or fall into a trance wondering if the Space Bag advertised on TV constantly really works. Or is that just me?
College T-shirts: Who knew they would come in handy?
Posted by: | CommentsAre you ever looking for things to do with your old T-shirts? Look no further. Michelle, our knitting expert and my fabulous roommate has the answer: kitchen rugs!
She made a beautiful one for our apartment, and I set out to copy her genius do the same for a friend. I loved that it was a great way to reuse material I already had on hand, particularly old undershirts that were too gross to go to Salvation Army.
Michelle was inspired by her favorite knitting book, Mason Dixon Knitting. The book discusses making rugs using potholders that you can buy in a craft store. What does a potholder look like? A big circle, or the bottom of a T-shirt cut off in a tube shape! She quickly cut up her old T- shirts and knitted away.
This is the perfect beginner’s knitting project, and it can be completed in just a couple of hours, which agrees with the side of me that needs instant satisfaction. I had to pull the knitting out a few times to get the exact size I wanted, but since I was using such big needles, it was easy.
Here’s what you’ll need to complete it at home: Read More→
More Nerdy Crafts!
Posted by: | CommentsIn what is clearly going to be a continuing series, check out this amazing – nerdy! – sweater vest which someone made by creating a knitting pattern from a Super Mario Bros. 1 screen shot. (From the looks of it, this is world 1-1. Yes, childhood!) This comes compliments of the Geek Crafts blog, which on the whole is pretty genius. But this sweater vest is next level.
Right now, Erin and I are both still working to graduate from the knitting/purling stage of our ongoing training. Speaking only for myself, since Erin is not nearly as nerdy as me, to be able to make something this amazing is but a pipe dream. But word on the street is dreams come true if you work hard enough (I know this because every celebrity who accepts an award always says so) and this shall be mine. Should I aim higher in life? Perhaps. But this is my blog and I’ll dream on it like I want to.
