More DIY from the UK: Patchwork Pattern Maker
Posted by: | CommentsThis is too cool not to share. The UK-based site, Victoria and Albert Museum, is letting you upload any image you want and turn it into a pattern to make a quilt! I don’t quilt, but for those of you who do – this seems pretty awesome. What a great gift for a baby shower, beloved grandparent or someone special in your life.
Check out the site here to upload your image and make the pattern.
Thank you to How About Orange for the tip.
Make Your Own Linens
Posted by: | CommentsI’m afraid this goes into the “Only If I Become a Millionaire Who Doesn’t Have to Work” file, bu I absolutely loved this link from Centsational Girl about making your own linens using a hand-carved block technique.
As previously mentioned, I hate buying anything I feel I can make myself – especially when it comes to decor. (Remember this painting post?) And not that I can make anything this gorgeous (I mean, I can’t compete with native, skilled, local artisans), but I’d sure like to try! Perhaps, though, using a less complicated technique like embroidering or using a fabric pen to create something on a simple linen (like a bath towel or a throw pillow).
Anyone else out there make their own textiles? Curious what techniques you might use!
More Nerdy Crafts!
Posted by: | CommentsIn what is clearly going to be a continuing series, check out this amazing – nerdy! – sweater vest which someone made by creating a knitting pattern from a Super Mario Bros. 1 screen shot. (From the looks of it, this is world 1-1. Yes, childhood!) This comes compliments of the Geek Crafts blog, which on the whole is pretty genius. But this sweater vest is next level.
Right now, Erin and I are both still working to graduate from the knitting/purling stage of our ongoing training. Speaking only for myself, since Erin is not nearly as nerdy as me, to be able to make something this amazing is but a pipe dream. But word on the street is dreams come true if you work hard enough (I know this because every celebrity who accepts an award always says so) and this shall be mine. Should I aim higher in life? Perhaps. But this is my blog and I’ll dream on it like I want to.
Graph Paper – Not Just for Math Class!
Posted by: | CommentsI haven’t seen a sheet of graph paper since high school math class – and until today was quite happy to let that decade-long (gulp) record keep on keepin’ on.
But with all this free time, I decided to make a little pattern for an upcoming project and I needed a sheet to help sketch it out. I didn’t want to buy an entire pad, so I turned to the friendly Internetz to see if it could help me locate just a single sheet
Lo and behold, I found several free, downloadable graph papers at the curiously-named Incompetech Creative Industries. They have various kinds of types you can download, which are handy for one-off knitting and stitching projects. I chose the square pattern because the grid is nice and big, always handy when you’re trying to map something out for the first time. I’m sure they’re handy for math equations, too, but hopefully I’ll never know for sure.
If you wind up creating a pattern using these templates, we’d love to see it! I’ll show my finished one in a future post – so keep checking back.
