Happy Valentine’s Day

Posted by: Lia | Comments (1)

Whether your celebrating today with one special person, or a group of people, we hope that everyone takes a moment today to have a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Brian's gift to his lucky girlfriend.

We wanted to share the twist that Yay! DIY reader and friend, Brian, put on the sweet Valentine’s Day gift, Queen of Hearts, Erin posted earlier this week.

Brian chose a different way to decorate the cards, using a combination of cut-out magazine letters (can you spot the clever use of a a logo?) and ribbon.

Inside, he posted the 52 reasons why he loves her – so very sweet! Just another reminder that there is no one way to say I love you, and no one way to make a perfect gift!

It’s Valentine’s Day.  We’re all adults, and this blog is obviously closer to PG-13 than PG:  We’d all like a little sex on the beach in celebration.

But, A: it’s cold. and B: that’s probably not in the cards for many of us.  So instead, we bring you the next best thing: The Drink.   There’s nothing better than having too many fruity cocktails with your friends to drink until you can’t see your sorrows away.  To get the perfect recipe that will have you convinced that you’re in Bahamas, Yay! DIY consulted our favorite bartender and family friend, Pizzi.

Pizzi makes the best Sex on the Beach ever – even my mother enjoys them!  We asked him for some tricks of the trade so you can recreate his concoction for a single’s bash, or at your kitchen counter with your special someone.
…And here we go. Pizzi:

I will start by saying if you want to look like you are a real bartender never use ounces and quarter ounces and stuff like that. We do not measure.  Like a great chef, it is all by feel. When making drinks it’s better to know proportions than measurements. Use parts, such as: all parts are equal, one part, half part. etc.  That way you never have to measure or try to figure how much goes into a shot, drink, or punch bowl of sex on the beach. The proportions are always the same no matter how much you want to make.
Now to the drink:
Drinks are regional, if you ask for a Sex on the Beach in most parts of the country it is basically:
  • 1 part vodka
  • 1/2 part peach schnapps
  • 1 part cranberry juice
  • 1 part oj
But I prefer a little more peach I would use all four equally. Feel free to experiment.  Some people like less oj, but everybody’s taste is different and you really cannot do it wrong.
For a regional difference, try the Mid Atlantic (Eastern shore and DC) version:
  • 1 part Chambord ( substitute razmataz raspberry liquor)
  • 1 part midori  substitute regular melon liquor)
  • 1/2 part vodka
  • 2 parts pineapple juice

Pizzi is YAY!DIY’s drinks expert, consultant and friend.

If you’re kinda freaking out (like me!) about what to get your significant other for Valentine’s Day, these Google Maps envelopes we saw on Craftzine are awfully cute.

In case you are wondering how these could possibly be romantic at all, consider printing out the map that corresponds to a favorite vacation destination or restaurant. Or the location of a place you have dreamed about visiting.  To up the sap factor, you could even put a love letter inside.

In today’s digital world, a good old-fashioned letter in a personalized envelope is a vintage way to show you care. That will always be romantic!

Sirloin Tips with Brown Pepper Gravy

Sirloin Tips with Brown Pepper Gravy. Next on the menu? Better food styling skills.

I have three enormous issues when it comes to dinnertime: portion control, calorie content and a lack of patience. In 2010, I wanted to fix this, so I started a subscription to Cooking Light in the hopes of finding some brand new recipes that were quick to make, healthy to eat and could guide me in terms of how much is too much.

It only took me until February, but last night I put the subscription to good use -  making Sirloin Tips with Brown Pepper Gravy , served over egg noodles.

I made two perfect portions – one for dinner and one for lunch.  To say it turned out delicious is an understatement. I kicked this recipe’s ass.  Best of all -  the ingredients totaled less than $10, meaning I get two meals for a fiver. (You might go over $10 if you don’t have some of these ingredients at home, but not by much!) This also would make a delicious meal for two for Valentine’s Day…

Queen of Hearts is always your best bet…

Posted by: Erin | Comments (7)

Looking for the perfect gift for your significant other on a budget? We found this amazingly cheap, yet perfectly sentimental gift over at Trans-Craft-Inental’s blog.  The book is made using a deck of cards and is held together with binder rings.   Using masking tape, you can write a special message to your significant other about why you love him/her. Adorable, right? You can also laminate the front cover, to make it a little more durable.  I mean, seriously. This present is like, the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.

You can check out the full instructions and more picks at Trans-craft-inental’s blog here.

Drink More Wine, Make More Trivets

Posted by: Erin | Comments (0)

Last year, my friend Grace (a girl after my own DIY-minded heart) gave me this fabulous present: a DIY wine cork trivet kit from Wine Enthusiast. (You can still purchase them from the Web site!) Grace happily enables my wine cork collecting hobby, saving her corks for me.

My finished Trivet!

The kit is a super-easy and foolproof way to create a handy trivet at home, that takes minimal effort and time.

While I will definitely purchase another kit, I did learn a few things, which I’ll share in my directions. If you’re looking for something creative to do with your saved corks or to make a homemade gift (Valentine’s Day present for the man who collects corks? Or for the one who cooks? Birthday present for the best friend who helps you finish off enjoy each bottle until the end?) this is for you. Here’s what I did:
